The movie has gained a reputation for its steamy sexuality, intense psychological drama, cruel abuse, revenge, as well extravagant and opulent period set design and wardrobe. The story is a passionate and tumultuous romantic love triangle set against the Yorkshire moors in England. Emily Bronte (1818- 1848) of Yorkshire, England wrote the dark, tragic, and complex Gothic novel “Wuthering Heights” about doomed love, published in 1847. In the British Victorian era, the novel was very popular but criticized for its erotic content, cruelty, violence, domestic abuse, and revenge. It challenged Victorian morality, social manners, state religion, and the aristocratic class system. Today the novel is considered a classic and one of the greatest British novels of all time. Emily’s sister Charlotte Bronte wrote the British Gothic novel “Jane Eyre”.
The character Heathcliff is one of the darkest Byronic figures in literature, a tormented soul with a passionate and destructive nature. Orphaned he is brought to Wuthering Heights manor. He is dehumanized and abused by his step-siblings and becomes bitter, cruel, and violent. In love with married Catherine, he plots revenge against her and her husband Edgar. Together Heathcliff and Catherine make the perfect Gothic couple, vampire like.
Catherine Earnshaw is also a dark character who is manipulative with a wild streak. Though a wealthy aristocrat and married to Edgar, she loves Heathcliff and gains powerful possession over him.
