Mountains captivate our imagination and beckon the adventurous to ascend their lofty peaks. We are all fascinated with the extreme sport of mountain climbing with its majesty, death defying heights, extreme conditions, and the climbers pushing themselves beyond human limits. There have been many excellent mountain climbing feature films and documentaries that capture the adrenaline pulsing exhilaration, danger, drama, and intense mental and physical challenge.
Mountain climbing, or mountaineering or Alpinism, has been popular since ancient times. There are written accounts of ascending the Alps in ancient Rome, Medieval Europe, and during the Renaissance era. True story about two climbers who attempted to climb up the west face of Siula Grande Mountain in the Peruvian Andes. They encounter disaster – bad weather, frostbite, one with a broken leg. They attempt a self-rescue but get separated. Eventually each struggle to get back to base camp on their own.

North Face
A highly acclaimed film considered one of the best mountain climbing films. An excellent dramatization filled with action, suspense, and thrills. A true story about the 1936 German team disastrous ascent of the Eiger North Face, one of the most challenging climbs in the Alps. They encounter bad weather which causes an avalanche which kills two climbers, one has a broken leg and is abandoned, another has frostbite and dies in a rescue event.

An excellent breath-taking documentary worth seeing. Produced and filmed by the actual climbers in the film. For decades many had tried but failed to reach the summit of the 21,000 feet Mount Meru in the Himalayas, one of the most coveted prizes in climbing. After failed attempts before, three climbers decide to ascend Mt. Meru again.

An award winning Canadian-British true story climbing film about Hermann Buhl’s 1953 near death solo ascent of 26,660 feet Nanga Parbat. He was the first to climb the Himalayan peak where 31 people had died trying before him. After his team stopped climbing he continued on his own to succeed.

Vertical Limit
An adrenaline fueled action thriller with a stellar cast that set the standard for mountain climbing movies. The rescue attempt goes bad when nitroglycerine canisters explode killing three rescuers. To make matters worse, one of the trapped climbers starts killing others for their survival drug supplements.
